Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic 3 was originally planned to have twice as many levels as it currently has, along with a new playable character and a new storyline. The problem is, it got compromised due to the pressure of releasing the game quicker and earlier, thus causing it to be half-finished. Fortunately, SEGA picked up on what’s left, polish it, and release a follow-up product in the form of Sonic & Knuckles.
What is Sonic & Knuckles?
Sonic & Knuckles is considered the remaining half of what should have been in Sonic 3. As a continuation to Sonic 3’s storyline, the game follows the event after the fall of the Death Egg. However, it is still fully functional, thus prompting Sonic to catch Robotnik right before he gets the chance to obtain the Master Emerald to fix the Death Egg.
As mentioned, it will be your mission to catch Robotnik before he gets hold of the Master Emerald. Following the story by Sonic 3, it will be your mission once again to stop him, except that this time you will also be able to use Knuckles, who even comes with his own little story to share. However, unlike Sonic whose mission is to kick Robotnik’s butt, Knuckles is instead focused on saving the Master Emerald which is held by the Robotnik Copy and Sonic Robot.
Design and Gameplay
The story might not be the main focus of the game, but here you can expect a story of epic proportions which take place in finely crafted levels that can be found in this masterpiece. The game’s story and gameplay work side by side and is complimented by the game’s polished presentation.
Talking about the gameplay, you can expect a fun, exciting, and fast-paced experience. Sonic’s moves still remain the same as what he has since Sonic 2. Knuckles’s abilities on the other hand allow him to climb walls, fly by stretching his arms, and a whole lot more. He can even break down walls with ease using his knuckles. As you go through the game, you’ll come across many levels which range from hills to areas above the clouds, and even those where you’ll have to avoid getting hit by asteroids and missiles simultaneously.
The game’s design really shines with brilliant colours and impressive effects. It features explosions, fires, and any other amazing visual effects which could cause you to be immersed in the game. You can also expect catchy music which could get stuck in your head for days.
• A new and exciting storyline
• Amazing visual and sound effects
• Fun and exciting gameplay
• Game seems seemingly short
If you’re an avid sonic fan, especially when it comes to Genesis era games, then you should consider playing Sonic & Knuckles. The game’s separate stories for each leading character have managed to extend the gameplay somehow. If you’ve played Sonic 3 before and felt like you needed more, then you should consider this one as it comes with even more areas and certain major improvements. Overall, Sonic & Knuckles is a great game on its own.
